Spring
By Rachel Rowland (ABC School’s Academic Coordinator).

As springtime comes around once again, there are some words and phrases that pop into my mind, words like ‘fresh’ and ‘colourful’ which I associate with the gorgeous flowers that begin to blossom at this time of the year.

Spring has always been the season for new beginnings as we wake up from a period of hibernation after winter. In this article, I’m going to discuss some other words and phrases that are commonly associated with this wonderful season.

blossom

Fresh as a daisy

When someone is described as being ‘as fresh as a daisy’ we imagine them to be full of energy and in very good health. A daisy is a type of flower which has white petals and a yellow center and they are considered to be one of the freshest and best-rested flowers because they actually do ‘sleep’!

At sunset, the daisy closes its petals and opens them again at sunrise the next morning. With all of this sleep, it is no surprise that they are considered to be so fresh!

A ray of sunshine

Someone who is described as being a ‘ray of sunshine’ is a very happy person who makes others feel happy and more positive, particularly when dealing with difficult situations. If you are feeling down about something and you know which friend to turn to because he or she helps you to see the positive side of situations when you are feeling blue, you can say that they are ‘a ray of sunshine’.

raggiosole

Bright-eyed and bushy- tailed

This expression describes a person who is very enthusiastic and energetic. You may hear somebody say “Get a good night’s sleep so you’ll be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in the morning”. When we are full of energy, our eyes look brighter and the tail of a cat, which fluffs up when the cat is excited, refers to a person being lively and cheerful.

Social Butterfly

A social butterfly is a person who is very sociable and likes to have many friends. Butterflies are a common sight in many gardens, pollinating and feeding on a wide range of flowers. A person who is a social butterfly behaves in a similar way, as they network and jump from one group to another.

Farfalla

A spring in your step

If you walk with ‘a spring in your step’ you walk energetically in a way that shows you are feeling happy and confident. A person may walk with a spring in their step if something good happens to them, for example “Joe’s been walking with a spring in his step ever since he met his new girlfriend”. People often walk with a spring in their step after hearing good news.

Spring is a time of rebirth and growth therefore it is an ideal time to learn some new words and phrases. There are so many words and phrases associated with the weather in English and I have just covered a handful of them in this article.

Perhaps make it your new goal this spring to learn some more! You never know, it might put a spring back into your step!
