In the Callan Method, listening is as important as speaking. Many students find that in their day to day lives it is difficult to communicate effectively because of the difficulties they have an understanding native speakers. In a Callan method lesson, the teacher speaks very quickly and uses contractions. If the student can understand the teacher in class it helps them better understand native speakers in their lives outside school. However, for comprehension to improve the students must listen in class. Sometimes the student has difficulty understanding the teacher and it is natural for them to refer to the book. A better approach would be for the student to understand as best they can without worrying about every single word or achieving 100% comprehension. In the Callan method the work is repeated five terms over a period of five days. Total comprehension is rarely acquired immediately. A thorough understanding of new grammar and vocabulary is acquired over the course of a week during which the students listen and practice the use of the new grammar and vocabulary several times. This is a valuable approach, not just in school, but also in real life, where students are obliged to keep abreast of a flow of language if they are to communicate effectively.
