Job Employment Business Recruitment Interview 1714370
One of the most daunting experiences for any speaker of English as a foreign language is the job interview. In this week’s post, we share tips to help you prepare better for it and succeed!
  1. First impressions count
Make sure you dress according to the company’s dress code. Before the interview starts, remember to greet your interviewer with a smile and firm handshake. Try to make small talk during the walk from the reception area to the interview room.
  1. Be prepared
Go through your CV and the job advert just before the interview. Make a list of possible questions that could be asked to you and prepare an appropriate answer. Looking at the company web site will definitely help you to find out more about their ethos and give right answers to their questions. Be ready to talk about your knowledge, experience, abilities and skills and give real examples of them. Have at least three strong points about yourself that you can relate to the company and job on offer and, maybe, three weaknesses (but make sure this do not relate to the job too much!). pexels-photo-70292
  1. Don’t waffle
Get to the point when answering their questions, even if you need a few moments’ silence to collect your thoughts. In addition, provide relevant personal experiences to enrich your answers and show that you are not just making up what you are saying.
  1. Be positive :)
Interviewers like to see someone who is enthusiastic and shows real interest about the position. Attend your interview with positive energy, a sense of humour and a smile. This will show them that you are willing to learn and take on new challenges!

  1. Remember your body language
Posture says a lot about your feelings. That is why experts recommend that you keep a neutral posture and sit straight during job interviews. They also suggest that you keep your arms at your sides and do not cross them, as it shows defensiveness and resistance. Do not forget to make eye contact form the beginning so as to communicate effectively with the person in front of you and to demonstrate confidence and determination.
  1. Ask
It always creates a good impression when a candidate asks specific questions about the position. Read through the job advert and ask the interviewer(s) to clarify any points that you have doubts about. But remember: it is not advisable to ask about salary or holidays in your first contact with the company!
  1. Remember your manners
Make sure you thank the interviewer for having invited you. Tell them why you are interested in the company and job opportunity. Follow up the interview by sending a “thank-you” e-mail, saying how much you enjoyed meeting them and how interested you are. Take the opportunity to detail the key advantages you can bring to the company.
