TA Some students may hear “Ta” used to express gratitude in spoken English. This is a very informal form and should only be used if it comes naturally to students to whom it has become very familiar. It is not a form to be wilfully adopted. CHEERS “Cheers” is also a very common and informal form used to express “thanks”. Remember that this expression is used informally and therefore shouldn’t be used when writing to people you don’t know or in business emails. An article by the newspaper The Telegraph suggested that more Britons were using “cheers” than “thank you”: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/7959915/Britons-abandon-thank-you-in-favour-of-cheers.htmlthanks-1084770_960_720THANK YOU/THANKS “Thank you” or “Thanks” are the most straightforward words to use. If in doubt students should use these words to express gratitude. Their simplicity means the student will always be understood. Culturally, English people generally think it polite to say “please” and “thank you” to a greater extent than other cultures. OTHER PHRASES There are some common phrases which are also used to say “thank you”. Among these are “that was very kind of you” or “I really appreciate it”. If students listen to English speakers they will hear these phrases often and also become aware of the contexts they might be used. The first is a rather formal way to speak, the second less so. An informal phrase which is sometimes used is “I owe you” or “I owe you one”. These are informal ways of thanking someone who has helped you in a difficult situation and saying that you will do something to help them in the future. thanks
