December is a fantastic month to be living in London, as you’ll have the opportunity to visit and take part in a wide range of different Christmas activities. With so many things to do, it can be difficult to know where to start, so here’s our guide to the top five Christmas activities that you shouldn’t miss if you’re learning English in London at this time of year:

Ice skating

Temporary ice rinks appear in all sorts of places in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The most popular and one of the best is at Somerset House, in a grand 18th century courtyard (the nearest tube station is Temple). However, you’ll also find skating rinks at the Tower of London, the National History Museum, Westfield Shopping Centre and many other places. These are just a few of the places around London which have outdoor skating rinks. Show off your skating skills, or perhaps try it for the first time! ice-skating-235543_960_720

Christmas markets

You’ll find all kinds of special Christmas markets across London, selling everything from European foods and treats to home-made crafts and artisan goods. One of the best Christmas markets is at the Tate Modern Art Gallery (nearest tube station is Southbank), where lots of small wooden chalets line the area between the gallery and the River Thames. Here you can buy anything from a warming drink of traditional German mulled wine to hand-made original Christmas decorations. christmas-market

Christmas lights

London’s outdoor Christmas lights displays get bigger and better every year. You’ll find impressive decorative street lights at locations including Oxford Street, Regent Street, Covent Garden and Carnaby Street. christmas-light

Pantomime

Have you ever heard of a Pantomime? Pantomimes are a great British Christmas tradition. A type of musical entertainment theatre show, they’re normally based on a well-known fairy tale, such as Cinderella or Jack and the Beanstalk. A pantomime is often very light-hearted and great fun, featuring songs, comedy and dance. There are lots of different pantomimes taking place at theatres across London.
